High Country Dulcimers
High Country Dulcimers are the creation of Clarence ‘Mac’ McKinney, who makes hammered and mountain dulcimers in Boone, N Carolina. His shop/workshop is located in the famous Blue Ridge Mountains, close to Beech Mountain and Sugar Grove, the home of famous traditional dulcimer builders such as Ed Presnell and Leonard and Clifford Glenn.

Fully bookmatched gloss cherry body with white purfling down centre of back. Internal sitka spruce strutting. Fine-grained redwood top with hummingbird or bluebird soundholes, leaves and tendrils. Hollow cherry fingerboard with 6+ and 13+ frets, MoP markers at frets 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14. Flat, tulip-shaped head with a central, small diamond-shaped MoP inlay. High quality Gotoh enclosed tuners. Wooden nut and L-shaped bridge unit; through-tail string anchor (suitable therefore for ball-end strings only); cross-grained string strainer on top of the tail, made from brown wenge. Overall length 36⅜”, lower bout 8¼”, depth 2¼”, FBW 1½”, VSL 28½” (long scale), weight 2lb 05oz (1045g), strings (?original) 12/12, 14, 24w. Has a 6+ and 13+fret.
Pretty much unused and immaculate. A bright and lively instrument with good responsiveness. Intonation is generally good on the treble, less so on the bass towards the top of the second octave . Sold new in 2004 at a cost of over $500, including shell case (original invoice and price tag still in pristine case). Now $600.
